This book is the second book about the families who came from Cautano,  province of Benevento, Italy and settled in Cadosia, New York in the  early 1900s. As a result of knowing each other in a very small town in  Italy and relocating to a very small town near Hancock, NY for work on  the Ontario and Western Railroad, the families have been interwoven for  generations.

This book is about my ancestors from Cautano, Italy, and their journey to Cadosia, NY. It is dedicated to my father, whom I loved dearly, miss terribly, and wish I had asked more questions about our family history and growing up in Cadosia; my grandparents Joe and Angela Maria Vetrone Rillo. I know I would have loved Grandma had she lived a little longer. My grandfather was and will always be a treasure, and my sister, with whom I share this family history and whose descendants I hope will appreciate all their ancestors sacrificed and accomplished for our sake and carry the family name and history into the future with pride.

This book is about the DiSerio and Berardone families from San Chirico  Raparo, Potenza, Italy who settled in Cadosia, Delaware County, NY. These are my husband's great-grandparents and their descendants. His great-grandfather began life in America as a laborer on the Railroad. On the 1905 NYS census his occupation was “Merchant-Italian Supplies”. He bought, sold, 

and ran hotels, houses, and land in Cadosia and was part of the Cadosia Water Company, which dug the wells from the springs to the street (after they worked a long day on the railroad) and sold water leases to others in Cadosia. He owned a shoe store and raised and sold pigs. He and a neighbor had two of the first houses in Cadosia 

to have electricity in 1924. 

Not bad for the son of a shepherd!

Starting with the family tree that Aunt Jenny did many years ago my  intention was to go as far back in time as possible following the roots of the Zaczek and Kłosiński families that began in Łomża, Poland and came together in  America.  This book was a lot of research, a huge  learning experience, and something I hope to share with family so that the story of our family is known to all and our ancestors are never forgotten. 

This book was a gift to my mother on her 94th birthday. She said she never knew the names of her grandparents - now she does and many more before them!

The Van De Voorde/VanderVoort Family from Waterland-Oudeman, Belgium

There's so much to learn, starting with reading records that are in Dutch and French. Some records are dated by the French Republic calendar! What did they do for a living? Why did they leave Belgium? Where did they all settle?

Cadosia: The Italian Settlement

Along with the Rillo, Vetrone, DeSerio, and Possemato families, Cadosia was the new home for more than 25 Italian immigrant families who came from over a dozen towns in southern Italy. They settled in Cadosia primarily to work for the O&W Railroad, Acid Factory, and lumber industry. Some moved on, but most stayed.

It's no wonder the 1925 NYS census designated Cadosia "The Italian Settlement."  It was Hancock's answer to "Little Italy."

Hello Angela,

I’ve been trying to write for weeks ever since my sister-in-law told me about you. I apologize for taking so long. I’ve looked at the photos you sent and read a lot of the ancestry list of people I come from. I have to admit I cried through most of it. All my life I’ve looked in the faces of strangers and tried to find one that looked like me, only now to come across all of you, my mother’s people, and find that I don’t walk alone. I now have all these fabulous ancestors at my side.  I hope to one day find my grandparents’ graves so I can kneel before them and say thank you for being brave enough in coming to America. Thank you Angela for passing on all that information, names and faces of my mother’s people! I hope to be hearing from you as I am in awe knowing I have  cousins in this world.

At a first glance I was struck by the multitude of news that you managed to find and by the photographic kit that enriches the information and makes the volume beautiful and captivating. It will take me a while to read it all because, although understand english, I will need translator for some terms.
